Velociudad will revitalize Argentine motorsport

Norberto Fontana, former Formula 1 driver who currently performs in national series, visited Velociudad corporate headquarters and amongst other topics stressed the importance that a FIA Grade 1 circuit will have for Argentina.

Nicknamed “The Giant of Arrecifes” he became the 20th Argentine driver to race in Formula 1. Moreover, he has competed on innumerable tracks around the world and amassed fantastic victories and championships throughout his career. “Velociudad will revitalize Argentine motorsport. It is very important to have a safe circuit for drivers as well as spectators” explains the Argentine who began racing when he was 8 years of old.

Fontana won his first championship in “Karting Bonaerense” and later on in “Senior”. After his arrival to Europe, he became Swiss Formula Ford 1600 champion in 1993 with the Van Diemen team. Two seasons later, he won the German Formula 3 and the Masters category, after fierce and memorable battles with Ralf Schumacher, becoming the first Red Bull motorsport champion.

After competing two years in Formula Nippon, Fontana reached the pinnacle of his career. In 1997 and with only 22 years of age, he made his official Formula 1 debut with the Sauber team in the French Grand Prix at the historic Magny Cours circuit. “I have the best memories from that experience” Norberto confesses.

Since his return to Argentina, Fontana has competed in different national motorsport series becoming TC Champion in 2006 and two-time TC2000 championship winner. Also, the Argentine driver participated on the two last editions of Rally Dakar, held in South America.

"It is very important to work together to create new drivers abroad. We must support the young Argentine talents seeking to compete at the highest levels,” explains Fontana, who also took special interest in the Velociudad´s Driver Management program, with Eric Lichtenstein as it´s first representative.
